UCSF Department of Ophthalmology neuroscientist Erik Ullian, PhD, and David Rowitch, MD, PhD (Department of Pediatrics), have won a prestigious $1 million grant. The team will study astrocytes, the most common type of neural cell in the brain. The Allen Distinguished Investigator grants support research to solve one of the most challenging roadblocks in neuroscience: growing mature human brain cells in the laboratory. The image shows astrocytes and perineuronal nets in the visual cortex.
