Peer Review in Ophthalmology: Training the Next Generation of Vision Scientists

August 13, 2024

Dr. Matilda Chan, MD, PhD, representing the Council of Vision Editors, was recently featured in a publication in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (IOVS), highlighting an innovative program she has been leading: Peer Review in Ophthalmology: A Collaborative Approach to Training the Next Generation of Reviewers.

Dr. Chan, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Chiang, Director of the National Eye Institute (NIH/NEI), and the editors-in-chief of seven prominent vision journals—The American Journal of Ophthalmology, IOVS, JAMA Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Science, Optometry & Vision Science, and TVST—has spearheaded the Council of Vision Editors Fellowship (CVEF) Program. Launched on July 1st, 2024, this program aims to equip early-career vision scientists with essential knowledge of academic peer review, the publication process, and the workings of editorial boards. Read more and watch the video about the CVEF program on the NEI website.

In addition to the CVEF program, the team introduced an educational course titled “Journal Peer Review Fundamentals” at the 2024 ARVO Annual Meeting. This course, designed to demystify the peer review process, will soon be accessible through the ARVOLearn platform. Learn more about the course here.
