Distinguished ophthalmology leader shares insights on leadership, navigating crises, and strategic thinking.
On Thursday, October 22, 2026, the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology hosted the fourth annual Stephen D. McLeod, MD, Endowed Leadership Lecture in Ophthalmology, featuring David W. Parke II, MD, CEO Emeritus of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and Executive Chairman of Verana Health, Inc.
Held at the William G. and Ruth R. Hoffman Auditorium at the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision, the lecture brought together members of the UCSF ophthalmology community to explore the skills and perspectives essential to effective leadership in medicine.
Dr. Parke presented “Leadership Lessons: Competency and Crisis,” drawing on his decades of experience leading major ophthalmic institutions and professional organizations. His presentation explored developing an effective leadership style, guiding organizations through crises, and understanding the important distinction between strategic thinking and strategic planning.
Dr. Parke has held some of the most influential leadership positions in ophthalmology. He served as President and CEO of the Dean McGee Eye Institute from 1992 to 2009 and as the Edward L. Gaylord Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine from 1998 to 2009.
From 2009 to 2022, he served as CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, helping guide the world’s largest association of eye physicians and surgeons. He currently serves as CEO Emeritus of the Academy and Executive Chairman of Verana Health, Inc. In 2026, he received the prestigious American Ophthalmological Society Medal in recognition of his contributions to the field.
Established through a generous gift from UCSF alumnus David F. Chang, MD, and his wife, Victoria, the McLeod Leadership Lecture honors Stephen D. McLeod, MD, former Chair of the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology and current CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
The endowed lectureship recognizes Dr. McLeod’s exceptional contributions to ophthalmology and his commitment to developing future leaders. By bringing distinguished speakers to UCSF, the program provides faculty, residents, and fellows with opportunities to strengthen leadership skills that extend beyond clinical and scientific training.
Now in its fourth year, the McLeod Leadership Lecture continues to foster thoughtful conversations about leadership, professional growth, and the evolving responsibilities of physicians and researchers.
The All May See Foundation extends its appreciation to Dr. Parke for sharing his experience and insights, and to Dr. David and Victoria Chang for their generosity in establishing this enduring educational program.
