UCSF Ophthalmology’s glaucoma faculty of eight specialists, soon to grow to nine, care for a large and diverse patient population and is well positioned to advance new approaches to diagnosing, monitoring, and treating glaucoma. However, our clinical facilities are already at full capacity, leaving little room to use existing resources for research. To meet this need, we are establishing the Glaucoma Research Center for the UCSF Mission Bay Ophthalmology Clinic, located in the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision.
The center will advance promising research already underway, including new imaging technologies that measure blood flow within the optic nerve and fluid outflow from the eye, while also creating space to evaluate emerging technologies developed elsewhere. The Fortisure Foundation has provided the first $300,000 to help establish the center but rising equipment costs and the need for key personnel mean an additional $450,000 is required to ensure successful start-up and operation over the next three to four years.
