Enhancing Patient Care and Clinic Operations through TeamSTEPPS: A Collaborative Effort Led by Dr. David Hwang

August 29, 2024

In an ongoing effort to elevate patient care and optimize clinic operations, Dr. David Hwang, along with the UCSF Department of Ophthalmology, recently spearheaded two multi-disciplinary sessions focused on improving the patient experience and clinical efficiency. These sessions, held in late August and early September 2024, were a testament to the department’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in healthcare delivery.

Over 100 faculty and staff members gathered at the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision for two 1.5-hour-long group learning and improvement sessions. These gatherings were not just routine meetings; they were dynamic, hands-on workshops designed to foster collaboration and implement key strategies from the American Hospital Association’s TeamSTEPPS course.

TeamSTEPPS, which stands for Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety, is a highly effective program that equips healthcare teams with the skills to improve communication, teamwork, and patient outcomes. By integrating these tactics, Dr. Hwang and his team are ensuring that the department stays at the forefront of delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.

The benefits of these sessions will be felt throughout the department. With a focus on improving care quality, enhancing clinic flow, and streamlining operations, both patients and staff stand to gain significantly. These improvements will not only lead to better patient outcomes but also create a more efficient and satisfying work environment for the dedicated faculty and staff.

As we move forward, the insights and strategies gained from these sessions will continue to be implemented, driving ongoing enhancements in how we deliver care. The commitment to excellence demonstrated by Dr. Hwang and the entire department underscores our mission to provide the best possible vision care for our patients.

What great sessions indeed! The dedication and collaborative spirit of our faculty and staff ensure that we are always striving for better, more efficient, and compassionate care.
